Do you want to be a stinky Twit?!

Quentin Blake's Twits food illustration

Illustration by Quentin Blake depicting the food that can be found in Mr Twit’s beard!

Men with beards. Love them or loathe them, one of the most famous bearded characters is that of Mr Twit by the beloved author Roald Dahl.

Mr Dahl certainly wasn’t a fan on a bearded man. Mr Twit has a beard. His is dirty and has bits of food clinging to it. The wonderful Quentin Blake’s illustrations show old stinky food including maggoty green cheese, mouldy old cornflake and the slimy tail of a tinned sardine stuck in the bristles on Mr Twit’s face.

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of The Twits, Penguin Books have made these rotten characters even more grotesque! Scratch and sniff stickers depicting Blake’s original illustrations, are included free inside every book. These can be used to personalise Mr Twit’s dirty beard and make the most disgusting book cover known!

The Twits scratch 'n' sniff book

Customise the latest edition of The Twits, with stinky scratch ‘n’ sniff stickers.

The Aroma Company were approached to provide the stinky food aroma that has been used on these stickers. We came up with a pretty smelly old food aroma – not so rotten it is offensive, but just stinky enough to make the sticker recipients want to personalise their book!

Using Touch to Smell varnish, the aroma is contained within microscopic bubbles which burst when the stickers are rubbed. The varnish was applied by Penguin Books’ own printing partners. Wherever possible, The Aroma Company try to work with existing manufacturing processes, to minimise production disruption.

Val Lord, Managing Director of The Aroma Company said, “What a fabulous way to reach a new generation of young readers. The Roald Dahl Literary Estate and Penguin Books have produced a surefire hit to continue the enduring love for Dahl’s classic stories.

The inclusion of scented stickers adds an extra sensory delight, the memory of which will stay with them for the rest of their lives”.

The Guardian has also created a lovely piece for children, to explain how books in general and these stinky stickers have been produced. With child friendly language and a great video to explain the process, this article is a wonderful addition to the promotion of this book.
